Board of Governors Seeks Applicants for 14 Trustee Vacancies

TALLAHASSEE – The Nomination and Governance Committee of the Board of Governors is seeking applicants for 14 positions opening on the state’s university boards of trustees. 

Each state university has a 13-member Board of Trustees that has fiduciary responsibility for the oversight of university operations, establishing cost-effective policies or regulations consistent with Board of Governors’ regulations or guidelines, and implementing and maintaining high-quality education programs in accordance with the university’s mission.

“Serving as a trustee on the board of any of our institutions is a unique opportunity to help shape the future of the second largest public university system in the country,” said Brian Lamb, chair of the Board of Governors.  “Our System is working better together than ever before, and our trustees are a large part of that effort.  We are looking for applicants who are enthusiastic, diverse, and committed to raising the bar for the universities.”

Each university listed below will have one vacancy on their Board, with the exception of FIU and UWF who have 2 vacancies. All vacancies become open on 1/7/2023, except for Florida Polytechnic University which opened on 11/7/2022.

Florida International University

Florida Polytechnic University

Florida State University

New College of Florida

University of Central Florida

University of Florida

University of North Florida

University of South Florida

University of West Florida

University trustees are limited to two five-year terms, and incumbents completing their first term must reapply if they want to serve another term.

General qualifications include prior experience on any for-profit or non-profit boards, business experience, other relevant public service, a willingness to carry out the duties of a trustee, knowledge of university operations and the role of the Board of Governors and personal integrity.

 “Above all, we are looking for trustee applicants who are committed to the well-being and success of our students and to being good stewards of taxpayer dollars,” State University System Chancellor Ray Rodrigues said. “Furthermore, applicants should be ready to help execute the performance goals of the State University System and of the institution they wish to represent.”
