Items to Watch for the Upcoming Board of Governors’ Meeting

Strategic Planning Committee:  The Board will hear a presentation on financial aid for the System’s resident undergraduate population in academic year 2019-20.  The Board will also hear an overview of Pillars of Excellence spending through September 30, 2020.

Innovation and Online Committee: The Committee will consider a 2021 work plan to begin planning for a post-COVID world in the State University System.

Academic and Research Excellence Committee:  The Board will consider approval of the 2021 World Class Faculty and Scholar Program Report and the 2021 Professional and Graduate Degree Excellence Program Report. The Board will also hear a presentation of the Artificial Intelligence Initiative at the University of Florida.

Academic and Student Affairs Committee:  The Board will consider approval of the Policy Regarding the Evaluation and Awarding of Postsecondary Credit for Prior Military Training, Courses, and Occupations.  The Board will consider the approval of limited access status for the Bachelor of Arts and Bachelor of Science in Biological and Physical Sciences, at Florida Atlantic University.  The Board will also hear updates on student wellness metrics and hazing prevention.

Task Force on Academic and Workforce Alignment:  The Task Force will hear an overview of initiatives designed to ensure alignment between academic programs and the workforce needs of Florida, including academic program planning, career services, Programs of Strategic Emphasis, and the Baccalaureate Follow-up Study. The Task Force will also have a discussion with Mr. Bob Ward, President, and CEO of the Florida Council of 100, and Mr. Mark Wilson, President, and CEO of the Florida Chamber on post-COVID workforce issues.

Audit and Compliance Committee:  The Board will hear a summary report on CARES Act Higher Education Emergency Relief Funds.

Nomination and Governance Committee:  The Board will consider a recommendation of candidates to fill trustee vacancies at Florida International University, New College of Florida, University of Central Florida, and University of South Florida.

Full Board:  Board Chair Syd Kitson will give his State of the System address, including highlighting a new initiative on civic discourse.  The Board will consider the reappointment of Dr. Larry Robinson as President of the Florida Agricultural and Mechanical University.  The Board will also hear an update on the searches for presidents at Florida State University and New College of Florida.

The Board of Governors’ meeting will be held at New College of Florida in Sarasota, with committee meetings scheduled to begin January 27, 2021 at 8:30 a.m.  The full Board meeting is scheduled to begin on January 27, 2021 at 3:30 p.m. Meeting times are subject to change.
