This metric includes total expenditures for all research and development activities like clinical trials, applied research and experimental development, as reported in the National Science Foundation (NSF) annual survey of Higher Education Research and Development.

Total Research Expenditures ($Millions)

Research and Development (R&D) expenditures are the primary indicators of research and innovation in higher education. As of FY2021, the System ranks 5th among states’ public universities. The Board’s 2025 Strategic Plan goal of $3.0 billion was set to further strengthen the System’s research profile and to increase national rankings in research.

This metric is included in the Board’s Accountability Plan, 2025 Strategic Plan, Preemienent Research University Benchmarks, as well as Florida Atlantic University’s Board of Trustee Choice Performance-Based Funding (PBF) Metric.
