Florida State University trustees voted unanimously today to retain Eric Barron as president through April 2, one day after FSU Day at the Capitol and one week after a crucial SACS visit to the institution.
Barron, FSU’s president since February 2010, was named president of Penn State University on Monday, a development that caught every trustee other than Allan Bense by complete surprise.
Bense said today Barron had informed him Feb. 10 that he had interviewed for Penn State’s top job and that he was the search committee’s choice. Barron had been on the faculty at Penn State from 1986 to 2006.
FSU trustees also waived a clause in Barron’s contract, requiring a 180-day notice before taking a new job or leaving the university.
Bense said FSU will identify an interim president when the trustees have their scheduled spring meeting March 6-7.
FSU BOT holds emergency meeting
The trustees at Florida State are holding an emergency meeting at 11:30 a.m. today to discuss how to go about hiring a new president.
Eric Barron, FSU’s president since February 2010, was named Penn State’s new president on Monday and will start his new job on or before May 12.
FSU trustees aren’t expected to name an interim president today, but it’s likely a search committee will be formed.
FSU trustees also are likely to discuss how long Barron will remain as FSU’s leader.
