The chairman of the board overseeing the state university system didn't look far to find a temporary replacement for chancellor Frank Brogan, who will step down at the end of the month.
Jan Ignash, Brogan's second-in-command, has been tapped as interim chancellor. The full Board of Governors will be asked to approve promoting Ignash, the vice chancellor and chief academic officer, at a meeting Thursday.
"We are fortunate to have a seasoned academic leader on our team to fill in as interim chancellor while we conduct a national search," chairman Dean Colson said in a statement.
Ignash moved to Florida about 18 months ago, officials said. She previously served as deputy director and chief academic officer of Washington state's Higher Education Coordinating Board.
She also is a former professor at the University of South Florida, where she taught higher education administration. She currently makes $158,650 as vice chancellor. As chancellor, Brogan made $357,000 a year.
Once the board approves her as interim chancellor, members will decide if Ignash should get a raise.
Ignash said she will not apply for the job on a permanent basis.
