Gov. Rick Scott intends to highlight environmental and higher educational proposals in his 2013 fiscal plan during stops in West Palm Beach and Gainesville on Monday, according to releases from the governor's office.
First up will be education, with Scott outlining his educational funding proposals at the University of Florida’s Nanoscale Research Facility at 9 a.m.
As part of the $393.3 million hike proposed by Scott for the Florida State University System, the governor specifically set aside $15 million for the Gainesville university to achieve a national top 10 ranking.
The proposal has been warmly received by UF President Bernie Machen. But as expected, this has heightened rivalries among legislators with Florida State University backgrounds.
Later, Scott is scheduled to address environmental initiatives, with some additional focus on Florida’s Everglades, during a midday appearance before the Forum Club of the Palm Beaches at the Palm Beach County Convention Center.
The talks come as the Florida Wildlife Federation has sued Scott and the Florida Cabinet over the Jan. 23 decision to extend the lease for sugar and vegetable farmers in the Everglades.
