Rick Scott Promotes UF's Algebra Nation

Gov. Rick Scott continued his school visits for a third day on Friday.
On Wednesday and Thursday it was to announce his $2,500 pay hike plan for teachers. Friday was to mark the start of the University of Florida’s program to assist teachers and students with algebra.
Scott, who has pushed for science, technology, engineering and math programs, went to Dixie Hollins High School in St. Petersburg on Friday morning to promote Algebra Nation that was created by UF’s Lastinger Center for Learning and the Gainseville-based educational technology firm Study Edge as a free means to prepare students for the state-mandated Algebra 1 end-of-course exam.
Last spring, about half of Florida’s ninth-graders were able to pass the exam.
“Providing support for teachers and students in the areas of science, technology, engineering and math is one of the most important things we can do to prepare Florida students to pursue the career of their dreams,” Scott stated in a release.
UF and Study Edge are also working on other programs aimed at the end-of-year exams, including geometry and biology.
