Dean Colson, chair of the Board of Governors, said today he will be naming a three-person committee to review FSU’s new satellite film school program in West Palm Beach.
This is the first academic year for FSU’s new major in digital animation. Its founding partner, Port St. Lucie-based Digital Domain, filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy in September, less than one month after the first 28 students were enrolled in the program.
FSU President Eric Barron said FSU would follow any recommendation by BOG, but he spent about 15 minutes outlining why he would like to keep the new program where it is. He said FSU is in discussion with four national industry leaders about establishing partnerships with the university and bringing a presence to South Florida. He touted the role the film school program could play in Florida’s economy.
No BOG members voiced concerns regarding FSU’s plan, but administrators at Florida Atlantic University in nearby Boca Raton had questioned FSU in November 2010 when it announced plans to begin a new division of its highly ranked film school in West Palm Beach.
