PRESS RELEASE: Governor Thomas G. Kuntz appointed as chair of the Higher Education Coordinating Council
TALLAHASSEE— Board of Governors Vice Chair Thomas G. Kuntz has been elected to serve as chair of the Higher Education Coordinating Council. Kuntz, of Winter Park, will fill the seat previously held by Board Chair Mori Hosseini as the Board of Governors’ designee.
Kuntz retired December 31, 2013 after a successful 35-year career at SunTrust Bank. He was most recently the chairman, president and CEO of SunTrust Bank, Florida. He continues to be an active member of the Florida community. In addition to serving on the Board of Governors, he is a member of the Board of Trustees of Rollins College, the Scripps Florida Funding Corporation and the Florida Council of 100. He was appointed to the Board of Governors in 2012 and became vice chairman in 2013.
“Gov. Kuntz’s business background and experience with The Florida Council of 100 will serve him well in this role,” said Hosseini, chair of the Board of Governors. “I join the entire Board in wishing him congratulations.”
The Higher Education Coordinating Council was established to identify unmet needs and to facilitate solutions to disputes regarding the creation of new degree programs and the establishment of new institutes, campuses, or centers. The Council serves as an advisory board to the Legislature, the State Board of Education, and the Board of Governors.
Kuntz will begin his role Feb. 27 and serve until June 30, 2015.
“I look forward to working with the HECC to pave the way to a brighter future for Florida’s higher education,” Kuntz said. “Together we are dedicated to providing the highest level of academic quality for our students.”
