Statement By the Board of Governors Chair Ava L. Parker Regarding the State Budget
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE – May 6, 2011
STATEMENT BY BOARD OF GOVERNORS CHAIR AVA L. PARKER REGARDING THE STATE BUDGET
Ava L. Parker is an attorney in Jacksonville, and is in the second year of her term as the Chair of the Florida Board of Governors of the State University System:
“Investing in the State University System is critical to the future of Florida’s economy. The Board of Governors is grateful that our Legislature continues its commitment to our public universities as demonstrated in its proposed budget for 2011-12. As an example, Legislators will provide more than $123 million in capital construction and maintenance funding for university facilities [PECO – Public Education Capital Outlay]. This allocation will help sustain our current facilities, provide new classrooms and laboratories for emerging markets and industries, and advance a knowledge-based economy through greater degree production and increased research and development. Our graduates will continue to be better prepared for their role as the talent fueling Florida’s new economy. The Board of Governors appreciates its partnership with the Legislature. We understand that it is a difficult task to allocate scarce resources among all of the competing interests and needs of our great State.”
