Originally an upper-division and graduate institution to serve graduates of the community college system, today Florida Atlantic University serves 27,000 students on 7 campuses and sites. More than 170 bachelor's, master's, specialists and doctoral degree programs are available to them. With more than 43 percent of its student body classified as minority or international, FAU ranked as the most ethnically and culturally diverse institution in Florida's State University System. In addition to serving its regularly enrolled student body, the university offers education and enrichment to 20,000 men and women of retirement age through the largest university-based lifelong learning program in the United States. The university's expanding research portfolio earned FAU a designation of "High Research Activity" from the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching.
