Alan Levine is the Senior Vice President and Florida Group President, and is responsible for all of Health Management’s Florida operations, including 22 hospitals and a multitude of surgery centers, physician practices and other allied health services.
With 20 years of hospital operations experience, Alan has served as CEO of various hospitals and health systems throughout Florida, including the fifth largest public not-for-profit health system in the nation.
Modern Healthcare Magazine has named Alan one of 30 people in the nation who will have a powerful impact on health care in the next 30 years. Others on the same list include then Senator Hillary Clinton, Newt Gingrich, Barack Obama, Bobby Jindal and the Secretary of Health and Human Services. Alan was also named an "Up and Comer" in American healthcare by Modern Healthcare in 2005.
Prior to his current role with Health Management Associates, Alan served as Secretary of Louisiana's Department of Health and Hospitals, as well as Governor Bobby Jindal's senior health policy advisor. Prior to being recruited by Governor Jindal, Alan served as CEO of Florida’s Broward Health. Alan also served as Deputy Chief of Staff and Senior Health Policy Advisor to Florida Governor Jeb Bush prior to his appointment to serve as Secretary of Florida's Agency for Health Care Administration (AHCA). In his public service roles, Alan helped manage Florida’s and Louisiana’s response to 12 major hurricanes, managed the pandemic H1N1 Influenza response for Louisiana, developed a private model academic health system in partnership with LSU and Tulane University as an alternative to the public charity system model in Louisiana, led Governor Bush’s effort to reform Florida’s Medicaid program – a reform which has been expanded statewide by the Legislature, and created the first state website in the nation to publish hospital outcomes. Alan most recently served on the Board of Trustees of the University of Florida. He currently serves on the Board of Directors of the Barbara Bush Foundation for Family Literacy, the Foundation for Florida’s Future and the University of Florida Athletic Association. He has volunteered for Big Brothers/Big Sisters and Guardian ad Litem, and has served on a variety of other boards and commissions, including the Florida Tax and Budget Review Commission. Alan earned his Bachelor’s degree in Health Education from the University of Florida, a Master’s in Business Administration and Master’s in Health Administration from the University of Florida. His wife, Laura, attended the Florida State University, earning a degree in Nursing. His son attends the University of Florida and his daughter attends Louisiana State University.
